A 20-year-old Glendale man could face charges of animal cruelty after Maricopa County Sheriff's officials found a dead canine inside a trailer home that had been bound with zip ties and its throat slit.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that investigators believe Eric Saenz attacked his Shepard dog and left it for dead in the trailer's bathroom in the 12700 block of West Glendale Avenue earlier this month.

The dog had died by the time deputies entered the trailer. Its legs were bloodied from the zip ties that dug through the flesh, exposing bone, according to a Sheriff's Office statement.

It was not clear whether Saenz lived at the home.

At the time, deputies were investigating Saenz in connection with an armed robbery where two juveniles were threatened with a machete. Officials said they believe the animal abuse and armed robbery occurred within the same 24 hours.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio called the abuse "disgusting," saying "animal abuse leads to serious crimes against humans, including murder."

Saenz could face charges including felony animal cruelty, failure to provide food and water and criminal trespassing.

Anyone who suspects animal abuse is asked to call the Maricopa County Sheriff's Animal Cruelty hotline at (602) 876-1681.

Case Updates

Eric Saenz, 20, was sentenced to one year in prison for animal cruelty, and an additional three and a half years for concurrent burglary charges, authorities said.

Saenz, pleaded guilty to a felony count of cruelty to animals, after he bound his dog's legs with Zip ties and left the dog to die in an abandoned mobile home without food or water on October 4th, 2006 according to an Arizona Humane Society press release. It was also reported that the dog's throat had been slit.

By the time rescuers arrived the dog had died. The dog had struggled so desperately to break free that the ties severely cut its legs, authorities said. In April the Humane Society of the United States deemed this case one of the top-100 worst animal cruelty cases in the nation in 2006.

Judge Sally Duncan remarked that "the facts of this case are egregious," and "this type of act shocks the conscience." She continued by saying to Saenz, "you not only left the dog, you actually tortured the dog and then left it to die."

The maximum penalty for felony animal cruelty under Arizona law is up to one year in prison and a $150,000 fine. Saenz was immediately taken into custody following this morning's sentencing.
