An 18-year-old Anchorage man was charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment and cruelty to animals after beating his brother's dog, then firing a shotgun in the apartment they share, Anchorage police said.

Ernest Moore is accused of beating the dog on the night of Oct 5 in their North Bragaw apartment in Mountain View, according to documents filed in Anchorage District Court by prosecutors. When Moore's brother woke up to the sounds of his pet yelping, he ran to its aid, police say. A fight ensued, and Moore picked up a shotgun, loaded it and fired buckshot at a closet door, police say. His brother was not injured.

Anchorage police did not know the condition of the dog by Oct 9.

On the night of Oct 9, Moore was at the Anchorage jail.
