Hoarding over 100 dogs Prestonsburg, KY (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Oct 5, 2006 County: Floyd
Disposition: Not Charged
Person of Interest: man
There are some animal lovers that can't bring themselves to give away pets, and that's what officials think led to the recent discovery of over 100 dogs in a Floyd County home in early October.
Animal control officers went to the Jacks Creek home after receiving a complaint from a neighbor about loud barking and a bad odor.
The officers found many of the dogs in small cages without enough food and water to sustain them. While it may look like a case of animal neglect, a representative from the Floyd County Animal Shelter believes it was a mistake.
"I think they're well meaning people," said Kathy Mullins, manager of the shelter. "But it's gotten way over their heads."
Many of the dogs were taken to the shelter, but some still remain at the home.
The addition of close to 40 new dogs at the shelter has things quite crowded, with over 200 animals already in residence.
"With the public's help, these dogs can recover from the poor living conditions."
The shelter is asking for help in order to care for the dogs until they find new homes.
"We need the volunteers to come play with them and let them know that humans are great," Mullins said.
Mullins also said that the shelter needs toys, blankets, cleaning supplies, and puppy food.
As for the owner of the dogs, officials do not plan to pursue any criminal charges.
According to reports, animal control officers say that the man just had too many dogs to care for.
"He wasn't cited. He's agreed to work with us and we're going to work together and help him depopulate his problem that he has there," said Floyd County Animal Control Officer David Shepherd.
