The search is on for six dogs deemed "dangerous" that were stolen from an Animal Control Center.

Alachua County's Animal Control Center is off the beaten path, tucked away in the trees. This secluded spot is just one of the reasons this week's break-in isn't the first. People have been coming here, looking for pit bulls, for months.

"We believe [the thieves] parked somewhere out front here, cut through here," said Animal Services Director Ray Sim as he showed the triangular hole cut out of the chain-link fence that wraps around the compound.

The break-in this week is the third illegal entry here in several months. Deputies say the bandits used similar techniques and typically went after the same targets -- pit bull mixes.

The six stolen dogs were marked with scars. The county's veterinarian says they had been trained to fight. "Any animal that has been used primarily for dog fighting or purposes of dog fighting can be classified as a 'dangerous dog,' " Sim explained.

Detectives say this crime wasn't random. The dogs the crooks chose to snatch have a history. All came from the same group of eleven. They had been seized and deemed 'dangerous.' After a possible hearing, they were set to be destroyed just days later.
