A pet dog that was found locked up at a home in Daytona Beach, Fla., was hours from death after being fed once in four months, according to police.

Investigators said the dog was covered in urine and feces when a neighbor noticed the pet in the back yard of a home located on Magnolia Avenue in Daytona Beach.

"Police said (the owner) intentionally left the animal to die in a small cage in the family's back yard," Local 6's Tarik Minor said. "One more day and the dog, named Heidi, would have been dead."

The dog was so weak when she was found that she was not able to lift her own limbs, the report said.

"She is so emaciated and has lost so much body mass that she was not able to stand up," Human Society spokeswoman Michele Pari said.

"The owner advised that he had found the dog about four months ago and just didn't have the means to take care of it," Daytona Beach police Officer Craig Buth said. "And, in a four-month period, he remembered feeding it one time."

The dog's owner, who was not identified in the report, faces charges of animal confinement as well as animal abuse.

The Halifax Humane Society hopes to put the dog up for adoption when it recovers.

"Look at her, she is beautiful," Pari said. "She will make a wonderful pet for somebody and for her to die like that would have been a tragedy."
