Bird mill - 83 neglected birds seized Norfolk, VA (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 10, 2006 County: Chesapeake City
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Robert Griffin
A Norfolk man is charged with animal cruelty after authorities took 83 exotic birds from his automotive shop in mid-October -- including lovebirds and cockatiels.
Norfolk animal services supervisor Kasha Winston says the animals were being held in "horrible" conditions, with moldy water, no food and cages that hadn't been cleaned.
Winston says it appeared the birds were being kept for breeding.
Winston said some would have to be euthanized and the others will be placed with rescue groups or returned to shops they came from. She says that some may be put up for adoption.
Police say officers were doing a routine check of the automotive shop on Oct 10 when they found the birds. A police spokesman says Robert Griffin was charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. References« VA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Chesapeake City County, VA
