Severe horse neglect
Little Falls, NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Sep 1, 2006
County: Herkimer

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Deanna J. Larochelle

In her 10 years of saving horses, Susan Bloser says this may be the worst case of animal abuse she's ever seen.

The once powerful and sprightly mustangs, quarterhorses, ponies and stallions that arrived on her Lenox farm this month are emaciated and lethargic.

They were taken from a Herkimer County farm after state police said they found some of the animals sitting in their own feces, with burdock in their hair, drinking from a muddy creek and without food. At least three are unlikely to survive, Bloser said.

State police charged former owner Deanna J. Larochelle, 65, of 3645 Route 167, Little Falls, with failure to provide proper sustenance, a misdemeanor. Larochelle said she developed a pasture for the horses but was unable to move most of them out of the barnyard.

Thirteen of the 28 horses remained with Larochelle, but 15 others are at Bloser's Horsefeather Farms, where they'll be cared for and eventually adopted by new owners.

All told, Bloser has 100 horses on her 100-acre property. Last year, she found new homes for nearly 200 horses. Many of them came from pharmaceutical companies that needed pregnant mares' urine for a popular menopause drug.
