A 42-year-old Wood Dale tuckpointer has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty after he beat a dog with a broom handle last month. The dog was beaten so badly that it had to be euthanized, police said.
Wood Dale police say they were contacted on September 25 by a neighbor of Wieslaw Ziejka, who told them they believed a black Labrador mix had been beaten at Ziejka's home a couple weeks prior.
After canvassing the area and speaking to several residents, Wood Dale police learned that many of them heard a dog yelping and howling on Sept. 12, making sounds that indicated to them the dog may be in pain, according to a press release from Wood Dale police.
One witness told police they saw a man, later identified as Ziejka, striking the dog several times with a broom handle, causing the dog to cry and yelp in pain. The dog then cowered next to a truck in the driveway and was later taken inside by Ziejka, the release said.
Police interviewed Ziejka and learned the dog had recently been euthanized at a local animal hospital.
The veterinarian indicated that on Sept. 14, the dog was brought to the animal hospital "in very bad shape," the release said. "The dog was lethargic and barely responsive, and had to be carried into the hospital. In addition, there were sores on its head, snout and stomach from what appeared to be a caustic substance," according to the release.
According to police, Ziejka is involved in the tuckpointing trade and left chemicals in buckets at the home, that were apparently ingested by the dog. Police have been unable to determine whether the dog was intentionally poisoned or not.
Ziejka "has admitted to using a broom to get the dog out of the residence on the day in question," the release stated, "after the animal defecated inside the residence."
The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office approved two charges of Cruel Treatment of an Animal, the release said. The charges are both Class A Misdemeanors.
Police had no court information for Ziejka. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
