The inspector and program manager of investigation and enforcement at the Hamilton-Burlington SPCA was called to a home in the Garth and Linc area of the west Mountain around 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 where she found two dead rats and a dead cat. The dead were in a cage, while the cat's body was found in a carrier that had been put in a garbage bag.

Ms. LaFlamme said the investigation was particularly smelly and gruesome because the bodies of the animals were mummified, completely dried up. It appears the animals had been left to die without food and water for several weeks.

"They were just skin, hair and bones," said Ms. LaFlamme. "I think it was a horrible death."

Ms. LaFlamme said the remains have been sent to the University of Guelph where an autopsy will try to determine the cause of death.

At press time, Ms. LaFlamme said she had not been able to speak to the adult male who had been a tenant at the home and is believed to be the owner of the animals. The tenant had vacated the house a number of months ago and left behind some property that was found by the home owner.

The case is remains under investigation and cruelty charges are pending. An animal cruelty charge carries a fine of as much as $2,000.
