A deaf puppy was resting safely at the Brazoria County Sheriffs Office Animal Control Unit after police say he was thrown out of a moving car just before a pursuit on the night of Oct 1.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Micah Edwards said Michael Curry, 34, of Manvel threw the dog out of his car and started a chase that lasted 19 minutes and involved four different agencies.

He opened the car door, threw the dog out and took off, Edwards said.

The chase ended when Currys 1989 gray Mercury Grand Marquis crashed on Shady Creek Lane next to Oyster Creek, Edwards said.

He jumped out of the car and jumped into the creek, he said.

Oyster Creek Police Chief R.B. Hayes had been listening to scanner traffic concerning the chase at about 10 p.m., but he went to the scene when he heard the pursuit was going back into Oyster Creek, he said.

Speeds reached 100 mph as the pursuit went through Oyster Creek, prompting an Oyster Creek police unit to start following the trooper. Hayes said the officer wanted to provide backup for the trooper.

By the time Hayes made it to the creek, he said police were pulling the man out of the water.

People put their lives in danger and everyone else. Idiots, Hayes said.

The puppy was recovered by a Brazoria County Sheriffs animal control deputy. Herb Boykin, Brazoria County Livestock deputy, said the dog was unhurt and doing well.

Hes resting comfortably now, he said. This is kind of a sad thing.

Curry had a few minor abrasions on his face from jumping in the creek and was checked out by a nurse at the Brazoria County Detention Center, Edwards said.

DPS was assisted in the pursuit by Oyster Creek and Freeport officers, and Brazoria County Sheriffs deputies. Edwards said the chase reached speeds up to 120 miles per hour.

Curry was wanted on a felony charge of endangering a child and a misdemeanor charge of assault. Both charges originated from the Brazoria County Sheriffs Office.

Curry was charged by DPS with felony evading arrest and driving with a suspended license. The Brazoria County District Attorneys Office has indicated it also will pursue animal cruelty charges against Curry.

If you throw the dog out the window, were going to throw the book at you, said Jeri Yenne, Brazoria County District Attorney.

Boykin said he intends to keep the dog for now, but will try to find it a home in the near future.

He will be adopted out, he said. Were going to try and find a good home for him.

Boykin said he would prefer to find a new owner who would be able to deal with the dogs deafness.

Edwards said Curry was getting rid of the dog because his landlord would not allow him to have it anymore.

He said he knew if he threw the dog out the window in that neighborhood that it would be taken care of, Edwards said.
