A Buffalo woman was charged with one count of animal cruelty on Sept 29 after four horses and a 4-month-old foal were removed from a farm in Elma, where the horses were stabled, due to signs of neglect.
Lisa Collins of Rawlins Street will appear in Elma town court at 7 p.m. Oct. 12, said Gina Browning, a spokeswoman for the Erie County SPCA.
The animal cruelty count is a misdemeanor and punishable by a $1,000 fine and/or a year in jail.
SPCA officials determined on Sept 28 that the horses and foal showed signs of neglect. Browning said the agency was first called to the farm by a veterinarian who requested assistance in persuading the owner to allow a fifth horse on the property to be euthanized.
Later, the veterinarian, Dr. JoAnn Johnson of West Falls, raised concern about the other horses, Browning said. The foal also exhibited signs of poor nutrition and parasite infestation, while its mother seemed to have an intestinal condition, she added.
