Police on Sept 30 arrested a woman accused of neglecting hamsters at a Janesville home. Police arrested Lisa R. Gaiser, 23, at 6:21 a.m. at Union and Jackson streets in Janesville on 39 counts each of two charges: failing to provide food and drink and failing to provide proper shelter to animals.
She was in custody at the Rock County Jail on Saturday night in lieu of $13,836 cash bond.
An arrest card lists her as having no fixed address, but a police incident report names her address as 9 S. Pearl St.
It was from that address that Rock County Humane Society workers removed 33 live and six dead hamsters after a roommate called police on the afternoon of Sept 28.
She already is facing charges of failing to provide shelter and food to a Great Dane removed from her home in August. A court date in that case is approaching, said Deputy District Attorney Perry Folts.
Case UpdatesRock County's top prosecutor says a woman arrested on suspicion of neglecting 39 hamsters won't face charges in that matter.
But District Attorney David O'Leary said Tuesday that he will pursue an animal neglect charge in regard to the woman's care of her Great Dane.
"We have her on the one case involving the dog, and if she's convicted, the court can order her not to possess any animals for five years,'' O'Leary said. "It's a waste of judicial resources to prosecute her further regarding rodents.''
Police said officers went to the Janesville home of Lisa R. Gaiser, 23, in August to check out a foul odor. They found the Great Dane in a 3-foot high, 2-foot wide cage covered in urine and feces. They also found six dead hamsters.
O'Leary said he decided to pursue a neglect charge in regard to the dog but not the hamsters because that would have required an autopsy on at least one of the rodents.
"The same day that (case) came in, we had several cases involving sexual assaults of children,'' he said. "I decided to spend my limited resources on those cases rather than a case involving hamsters.'' | Source: Chippewa.Com - Oct 26, 2006 Update posted on Oct 29, 2006 - 10:35AM |
