Prosecutors say Julio Perez dragged his dog to death from the back of his pickup after the animal jumped from the truck bed. Now to 40-year-old is due in San Fernando Superior Court on Sept 26 to answer animal cruelty and drunken driving charges.
Authorities say Perez's German shepherd was attached to the truck by a metal cord tied to his collar. The dog was reportedly dragged at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour after jumping from the truck on Sept 24.
Prosecutors say Perez stopped after his passenger and witnesses yelled at him. He put the dog in his truck before police arrived.
Perez's four-count felony complaint alleges that he has three prior convictions for driving under the influence. Officials say he faces more than four years in state prison if convicted.

Julio Humberto Perez faces charges of animal cruelty and driving under the influence of alcohol. He remains free on $100,000 bail, which he posted after his arrest on September 24, 2006.
Perez allegedly tied his German shepherd in the bed of his truck, then dragged the dog to its death when it jumped out.
According to reports, he didn't stop until his passenger and other witnesses yelled at him.

A Sunland man accused of dragging his dog to death after the animal jumped out of his truck pleaded not guilty today to animal cruelty and drunken driving charges.
Julio Humberto Perez, 40, remains free on $100,000 bail, which he posted the day after his Sept. 24 arrest.
Perez used a metal cord to tie his German shepherd in the bed of his truck, then allegedly dragged the dog to its death at speeds up to 50 mph when the canine jumped out of the truck.
He eventually stopped after his passenger and witnesses yelled at him and put the dog in his truck before police arrived, according to authorities.
He was arrested Sept. 24 at his home, police said.
Perez has three prior convictions for driving under the influence between 1997 and 2004.
