Hoarding over 100 birds
Kenneth City, FL (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Sep 10, 2006
County: Pinellas

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Cheryl Sawyer

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies went to a St. Petersburg-area home this morning after receiving complaints of unattended dogs barking throughout the night.

Once deputies arrived at the 56th Avenue North home, they discovered a door standing open and unhealthy conditions inside the house.

Deputies found about 100 birds of various species, two dogs, two turtles, and a rabbit. They say no one was properly caring for the animals.

Deputies say they observed animal feces throughout the home along with numerous hanging bug traps that were full of dead insects. The home also contained numerous cages in need of cleaning, some of which contained what appeared to be sick birds.

Deputies arrested Cheryl Sawyer on animal neglect charges saying she owned at least some of the animals.

All of the animals involved were taken to the SPCA of Pinellas County for assessment and safekeeping by Pinellas County Animal Control officers and representatives from the SPCA. The investigation continues.
