A town of Maine man faces charges of animal neglect after 12 cats were found in a home he rented. Robert F. Steffen, 26, was renting the home at 3900 Decator Drive when an area resident reported an odor coming from the home.

According to a police report, Deputy Michael Selby of the Marathon County Sheriff's Department entered the home and found 12 dead cats lying around. The report goes on to say Selby estimated eight to 10 more cats were running around the house. Selby also said there were piles of cat feces eight to 10 inches deep around the home.

On Aug 20, the Marathon County Humane Society retrieved four cats from the home.

The case has been referred to the Marathon County District Attorney.
