A man pleaded not guilty on Aug 30 to charges that he stabbed his live-in girlfriend and her teenage son to death at their Montecito Heights home earlier this month.

Emilio Cruz Heredia, 40, is charged with two counts of murder for the Aug. 14 slayings of Carol Bloomfield, 36, and her 17-year-old son, Jonathan.

Bloomfield was also the mother of Heredia's two young children, ages 2 and seven months. The children were taken into protective custody, according to Jason Lee of LAPD Media Relations.

Heredia is also charged with two counts of child abuse involving the children, along with one count of animal cruelty for allegedly stabbing the family dog, which survived.

The murder counts include the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, which could make Heredia eligible for the death penalty if he is convicted.

He is being jailed without bail and is due back at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse Oct. 11.

Officers went to 576 E. Avenue 28 just before 9:50 p.m. Aug. 14 and found the victims and the suspect with stab wounds after a family member called 911.

Heredia is accused of first attacking his live-in girlfriend, then her teenage son when the youth came to his mother's aid, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Paul Vernon said shortly after Heredia's arrest.

Police said the family dog was stabbed while trying to defend the mother and son.
