The Madden family dog didn't run away, but he may have ended up in the circus.
At least, that's what the dognapper is claiming.
The two-year-old Labrador-collie cross disappeared from outside the family home on Aug 16.
Left behind was a brown envelope containing $50 and a note explaining the abduction and signed by "frazzled circus employee."
The note states the dog was taken to replace a circus show dog, named Sasha, that disappeared while the unnamed troupe was in Calgary.
The theft has hit her three kids hard, said Rhonda Madden.
"They don't know what to think, they're very confused and they're heart-broken that he's gone," she said.
"We're moving this week ... and none of us can take down his kennel and put his stuff away."
A neighbour told police she saw the dog taken by a heavy-set woman with a blond pony tail, wearing a blue sweat shirt and holding a brown envelope.
The note left behind offers an explanation as to why Hunter was taken and apologizes for the crime.
"If it is any consolation at all, not many can say the old cliche about running away with the circus and how fewer still can say that the circus ran away with their dog," it states. References
