Three neglected horses were removed from a property in Lockwood where they were found with no food and dirty water.
A spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Monterey County says the property owner could face animal cruelty charges. He was living part-time in a trailer on the rural property.
Two horses and a pony were severely emaciated with matted tails and manes. None of the horses had food and they only had a small amount of dirty water in their corrals.
The S-P-C-A investigators took the animals to a shelter where they were expected to begin treatment.
Investigators discovered the horses on Aug 14 and gave the owner 24 hours to contact the S-P-C-A.
Case UpdatesZeb Pirzada of Lockwood, pleaded no contest this week to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty in neglecting his horses and pony, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for Monterey County said.
The SPCA said their humane investigations department rescued two severely emaciated horses and a pony from the property in August 2006, following a report by the county's Sheriff's Office.
They said a bay gelding, white gelding and a brown-and-white pony were discovered in small separated cages without food and only a little, mucky water.
Pirzada is banned from owning any equines through April 6, 2011, and was told to pay $33,315 in restitution to the SPCA.
