A city man fed up with his girlfriend's repeated requests to take her dog for a walk hung it out a third-floor window, police said. When the woman went to her dog's rescue, police said Julio Vasquez beat and choked her.

Vasquez, of Charles Street, was charged on Aug 24 with second-degree assault, breach of peace and cruelty to animals.

Superior Court Judge Susan Reynolds later ordered Vasquez held in lieu of $150,000 bond and continued the case to Sept. 7.

According to police, Vasquez became irate with his girlfriend's repeated requests to walk her 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Susie. He then grabbed the dog by its collar and dangled it out the window, threatening to drop her.

When the girlfriend attempted to grab her dog, Vasquez allegedly pushed her down. Police said he put the animal on the floor, turned his attention to his girlfriend who he began beating and choking.

Police said neighbors heard the commotion and came to the woman's aid. Vasquez then fled the apartment.

As officers were interviewing the girlfriend, Vasquez kept calling the apartment. Police said they traced his calls to a pay telephone on Madison Avenue and arrested him there.
