Disposition: Convicted
Defendant/Suspect: Owen Arfon Jones
A North Wales farmer will be sentenced in September 2006 after admitting a string of animal cruelty charges. Owen Arfon Jones appeared before magistrates in Pwllheli to answer charges brought by Gwynedd trading standards.
The 43-year-old, of Bron Miod Farm, Llanaelhaearn, near Pwllheli, admitted nine charges of animal cruelty, failing to dispose of carcasses and failing to keep proper records.
He denied five other charges which were withdrawn after the authority offered no evidence.
Alwyn Jones, prosecuting for Gwynedd council, told the court the offences happened between September and October 2005.
The first charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a Welsh mountain ram, brought under the Protection of Animals Act 1911, is alleged to have occurred on September 21.
A second charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a lamb was dated September 22.
The other two offences of unnecessary suffering are alleged to have happened on September 22 and 29.
The fifth offence, being in possession of the decomposed remains of an ovine animal, is alleged to have happened on September 23.
The sixth charge accuses the defendant of being in possession of the mummified remains of an ovine animal.
The remaining three charges refer to the failure of the defendant to produce records and failure to send in a copy of a movement licence.
Michael Strain, defending, said: "What we have here is a very complicated issue relating to the burial of animals. "
The case will be heard at Pwllheli on Wednesday, September 27. References
