Cat choked with leash
Watervliet, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Aug 23, 2006
County: Albany

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Rita Bormett

Police say Rita Bormett was walking her cat down 23rd Street on a leash. They say the leash choked the cat each time she pulled on it. An Animal Control Officer spotted her, apparently pulling the leash so hard that the cat was pulled mid-air some 10-15 feet.

After the animal control officer tried to examine the cat, Bormett allegedly got violent, attacking him and a police officer who also responded.

Bormett was arrested and arraigned on charges including aggravated animal cruelty, attempted assault and resisting arrest. She was sent to Albany County Jail without bail.

The cat is recovering at the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society in Menands.
