A pet owner was arrested after he slaughtered his dog in a bedroom of his home Wednesday afternoon, according to the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

Jason Sexton, 29, 401 Peach Tree Road, was charged with intentional killing of a domestic animal and evading arrest.

Sgt. Penny Cornett said the incident began when she responded to a call about a dog bite. Cornett spoke with Violet Nave, who said her 9-year-old daughter had been bitten by Sexton's dog. Cornett said the child had a 3-inch cut on her left arm. She was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital for treatment.

After taking the complaint, Cornett went to speak with Sexton. She said Sexton told her he had already destroyed his dog.

Cornett said neighbors then told her they had not heard a gunshot, so she returned to Sextons residence to see how he had destroyed the animal. At the same time, she called headquarters to see if there were any outstanding arrest warrants on Sexton.

She was told there was a warrant on Sexton charging him with failure to appear on a charge of allowing his dog to run at large. It was later learned that the warrant was in error and Sexton had appeared in court.

Cornett said that when she talked with Sexton about the warrant, he ran out the basement door. She said he was found about 15 minutes later hiding under a deck and was taken to jail by another deputy.

Cornett then went into the residence with Sextons stepdaughter. She said she found a golden retriever lying on the bedroom floor and that blood was everywhere in the room. She said Sexton had killed the dog with a "go-devil," which has an ax on one end and a hammer on the other end.
