As temperatures soared toward 100 degrees on Aug 1, Sheboygan authorities found a dozen animals without food and water confined in a sweltering house and garage, leading to 11 counts of animal neglect for a 52-year-old Sheboygan man, authorities said.

William L. Vreeke, 52, of 2225 S. 12th St., was cited with 11 counts of animal neglect, giving him more than 30 animal-related citations since 1999, said Sgt. Dave Anderson of the Sheboygan Police Department.

The animals 10 dogs, a cat and an iguana were removed today by the Sheboygan County Humane Society from Vreekes home and his mothers, which is in the 1200 block of Camelot Boulevard, Anderson said.

Vreeke has not changed his animal care methods despite extensive police involvement over the years, Anderson said.

"The animals would be without water, without food, ventilation is very poor, noxious odors would often emanate, Anderson said, adding that neighbors often complained. Hes been warned and cited in the past in trying to address these problems.

Tammy Harris, shelter manager at the humane society, said the organization has been called to Vreekes house in 2000, 2002 and was there again July 28. Vreeke collected the animals from the humane society after paying an impound fee last week, Harris said.

Bill really thought he was doing the right thing and that he was really taking care of them, and I guess I just wonder what it takes to get people to understand what an animal really needs and that theyre dependent on us for everything, Harris said. We tried educating him, we tried telling him what they needed.
