A 26-year-old man faces six months in prison and a $500 fine for leaving a puppy in a hot van in 99-degree heat in the parking lot of a Chicago mall.
The dog was strangled by its leash as it thrashed around in the stifling heat on Aug 1, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
A witness said the puppy, a German shepherd mix, choked and did not die of heat stress although it clearly was trying to get of the van.
The dog was alone in the vehicle at least three hours before passersby alerted mall security, the report said, and the owner was charged with animal cruelty.
"It was an extremely critical situation for the dog to be in the car," a veterinarian for the city's Animal Care and Control department told the newspaper. References « More cases in Lake County, IL
