The Humane Society of Missouri is offering a reward for information regarding a severely abused Chihuahua. "Charlotte" was discovered on the porch of a home in St. Louis with a hard plastic zip tie tightly attached to her neck.

A St. Louis resident found the dog and brought it to the Humane Society office. It had a plastic zip tie attached to its neck, causing the head to become grotesquely swollen to the size of a grapefruit.

The dog named Charlotte by Humane Society staff is also badly underweight.

The resident alerted the Humane Society, which immediately transported her to an emergency center.

Right now, her prognosis is guarded.

Authorities are canvassing the area where Charlotte was found.

Case Updates

Charlotte, the one-year-old Chihuahua rescued July 27 by a concerned citizen and the Humane Society of Missouri, remains in guarded condition at the Humane Society's Veterinary Medical Center on Macklind Avenue.

According to Dr. Melinda Fleming, Assistant Director of Veterinary Services, grotesque swelling to Charlotte's head quickly decreased after the removal of the zip tie wrap that was tightly attached around her neck. However, medical tests have revealed that Charlotte suffers from a heart murmur, anemia and heartworms. She was also malnourished.

"We are aggressively treating her and continually monitoring her condition," says Dr. Fleming. "She is eating and drinking, although, until she more fully recovers, we cannot determine the full extent of her injuries.

According to Kathy Warnick, president, the Humane Society of Missouri has increased to $4,000 the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for inflicting this horrible abuse. "Our Rescues and Investigations division is continuing to investigate in the area the dog was found and would like to talk with anyone who has information that could help bring the abuser to justice."
