The bodies of 10 dogs that police believe had been tortured before they were killed were found by a woman in Theodore on Saturday morning. The dogs had been dumped near railroad tracks, a police spokesman said.

The dogs were found along the tracks near Kooiman Road about 10 a.m., said Sgt. John Goodwin. There were different breeds of dogs, and some were far more decomposed than others.

Some of the dogs had been skinned and others placed on the track so that they would be decapitated by a train, Goodwin said. Police do not believe the dogs were used for fighting.

Mobile County animal control officials responded to the scene to clean up the corpses.

Goodwin said the incident fits the criteria for suspects to be charged with felony cruelty to animals, the so-called "Gucci law" passed by the Alabama Legislature in 2000. The "Gucci law" is named after a Mobile dog of the same name who survived horrific torture.

The charge carries up to 10 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines under the state's Pet Protection Act.
