Puppy thrown down 8-story trash chute
Atlanta, GA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 27, 2006
County: Fulton

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A 6-month-old puppy was rescued from a refuse compactor after apparently plunging several stories down an apartment building trash chute – now an animal cruelty investigation is underway to determine who did it and why.

"There's a lot of bruising, then of course, he came in smelling like McDonald's french fries."

Dr. Michael Good is more than just a noted veterinarian – his passion for animals lead to the creation of the Homeless Pets Foundation, where unwanted, abused and injured animals are cared for and provided good homes.

That's why a 6-month-old puppy ended up at his clinic.

"No sane person would take a poor, helpless puppy, who is very sweet and probably very loving, and throw it down an 8-story shaft," says Dr. Good.

The puppy was found by maintenance personnel in a refuse compactor at the bottom of a trash chute at the Briarcliff Summit Apartments in northeast Atlanta. Workers heard the dog whimpering.

"The dog was getting crushed by the compactor, that's why he was crying out," says maintenance worker Marcell Newell. "I don't know which person could do something like that to an animal. That's sad for someone to throw a dog down the trash chute. That is really sad."

Fulton County Animal Control was notified, and the puppy was rescued and transferred to Dr. Good's veterinary clinic in Marietta.

Dr. Good says the puppy has a broken leg, but otherwise is in pretty good shape.

"Hopefully she'll end up in a very good home where she will get nothing but love and affection and her days of abuse are over," says Dr. Good.

Fulton County Animal Services is conducting an animal cruelty investigation, but so far they have no suspects.

If you have interest in adopting the puppy or any other dog, you can call the Homeless Pets Foundation at (404) 451-9494 or call Fulton County Animal Services at (404) 794-0358.
