Deborah A. Fedak, 44, Orleans Avenue, has been charged when she turned herself over to the town police.
Fedak has been charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals. The authorities found a total of 151 dead animals in the Town of Niagara and Niagara Falls, in the two homes she owns.
A warrant was issued after 55 rabbits, 16 guinea pigs and a cat were found dead in an unoccupied trailer home where she used to live. "There wasn't much left but fur and bones. In my years as a police officer, I've never seen anything like it."
The investigation started on Thursday when the Expressway Village property manager James McDonell found 72 animals dead in their cages at that location. Fedak had not lived in the trailer for two years and stopped paying rent on the trailer.
Fedak was set free on a $1,000 bail after she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
There were 79 more dead animals were found dead at 3334 D Street, Niagara Falls; these consisted of 65 rabbits, 10 chinchillas, two ferrets and two guinea pigs.
A chinchilla and three dogs at that location were still alive and taken to the animal hospital for evaluation. They all appeared to be doing well and will be taken to the SPCA after they all receive treatment.
Fedak was a respiratory technician at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
"She won many awards. (Her rabbits) came in first place at the Niagara County Fair a couple of times." She kept purebred angora and possibly other rabbits to exhibit and show them. Fedak had trophies and ribbons at both of her homes.
