David Andrew Childree, 36, of Cornville, was arrested on the afternoon of July 21by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office on charges of felony cruelty to animals.

Friday morning, the YCSO received a report from a neighbor that Childree's dog, a male black lab/pit bull mix, was in distress. When Animal Control arrived at Childree's Cornville home, they found the dog lying on the ground with his cable line tangled around his body. The cable was so tightly wound around the dog that it needed to be cut away. Once freed from the cable, the dog was too weak to stand. There was no shade provided in the area where the dog was tied up and all water bowls were dry.

Animal Control took custody of the dog and transported it to the Verde Veterinary Hospital. The dog was diagnosed as suffering from heat stroke and had a body temperature above 112 degrees

At about 10 a.m., the Sheriff's Office was advised by the animal hospital that the dog had died. Deputies and Animal Control Officers returned to the Childree residence where Childree was placed under arrest for cruelty to animals.

Citizens are reminded that the Animal Cruelty Task Force of Northern Arizona is administered by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. A Hot-Line to report cases of neglect and cruelty can be reached at (928) 771-3595.
