CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Case #9344 Rating: 4.0 out of 5

Hoarding 37 cats, 3 dogs
Malvern, PA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Sep 28, 1999
County: Chester

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Janece Polin

Janece Polin, 47, has been found guilty of animal cruelty for failing to give the 37 cats and 3 dogs adequate, clean living conditions and veterinary care. She was also found guilty of 40 counts of failing to vaccinate the animals and three counts of failing to license the dogs.

Polin was sentenced to 30 days in the Chester County Jail, fined $8,300 and had to forfeit ownership of the 37 cats and 3 dogs to the Chester County SPCA.

When the animals were taken from Polin's home, they were living in extremely unsanitary conditions and were suffering from extreme neglect.

"Many of the dogs and cats were flea invested and several of them had ear mites, open sores and serious skin conditions. In addition, many of the animals were suffering from upper respiratory and intestinal problems."

The SPCA will continue to care for the animals. None of the animals will be put up for adoption until Polin's appeal to the Chester County Court of Common Pleas is resolved.

Polin had faced animal-related charges in 1997 while living in Upper Darby, Delaware County. At that time she was fined $2,400 for violations of township ordinances for animal violations.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
