Dog tethered, left to die
Narrowmine, NSW (AU)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jul 12, 2006

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A blue cattle dog was found dead on July 12 on Craigie Lea Lane. The animal had been abandoned, and was tied by its collar to a large burnt out tree stump with nylon rope.

There was only enough slack on the rope for the animal to sit down with no food or water available for the dog.

It is hard for a veterinarian to determine how long the dog had been there, and how long it would have taken to die due to differing determining factors such as environmental conditions, the age of the dog, and whether the dog was usually housed inside or out.

The dog was not micro chipped so it is unable to be traced without someone coming forward with information.

RSPCA inspector for the central west, Polly Jackson said, "This is the second incident whereby a dog has been found dead in this area.

"It is a terrible act of cruelty leaving these animals too die."

Acting chief veterinarian of the RSPCA, Dr Magdoline Awad said "This a prosecutable offence, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, failure to provide proper and sufficient food, water and shelter to an animal we are able to prosecute.

"There is no reason for anyone to leave a dog to die when you can surrender the dog to the RSPCA or turn it into the council ranger," Ms Jackson said.

"No questions are asked, we are not judgmental, it is better for the dog at the end of the day to be surrendered so it has the ability to be rehoused or euthanised humanely."

"The maximum penalty for this incident is $22,000 and or two years' imprisonment."
