Pasado's Safe Haven is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who left an injured pit-bull terrier in a trash container in Lynnwood.

"Peanut," as the 1- to 2-year-old female is now known, was found zipped inside a baseball-equipment bag and thrown into the garbage at the Woodland Greens apartment complex June 28.

The dog was discovered after a passer-by heard sounds coming from the trash bin and called police.

The mostly white dog with a brown eye patch had a severely broken leg and was taken to the Veterinary Specialty Center in Lynnwood, where she was given morphine for her pain and underwent surgery the next day.

"They can't do this. Animals aren't disposable. You can't do whatever you want to an animal just because you own them," said Rita Brogan, national coordinator for Pasado's, a Snohomish County animal-rescue shelter.

Dr. Nicholas Nelson, medical director of Veterinary Specialty Center, said Peanut is recovering well. He said her leg, which is in a cast, could have been broken either in an accident or through violence.

"It doesn't seem like there's been a lot of attention given to Peanut prior to us being involved," Nelson said.

"It's hard to believe this would occur," he said. "What's most concerning about this is there are animal-control agencies, there are humane societies, that would take a pet in and wouldn't ask any questions."

Nelson said Peanut will be given to an animal shelter for adoption.

Lynnwood police reported Saturday they are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lynnwood police animal-control unit at 425-744-6982, or Pasado's Safe Haven at 206-779-9102.
