A Polk County resident was arrested and nine roosters were seized after a special-operations unit received a tip about a cockfighting ring in Haines City.
Jean Fils Derciem, 46, was arrested on July 10 and charged with one count of fighting and baiting caged animals and six counts of cruelty to animals, officials said.
Haines City police detectives discovered the roosters at 300 Polk City Road. The roosters, which did not receive proper food or water, were euthanized under an emergency petition, officials said. Jean Fils Derciem, 46, of 300 Polk City Road, pleaded no contest to being present where animal fighting was taking place and also to five counts of confining animals without sufficient food, water or shelter. He was sentenced Feb. 2 in Judge J. Dale Durrance�s courtroom.
Haines City police arrested Derciem on July 11 at his home and charged him with fighting and baiting caged animals and cruelty to animals.
Haines City Police Lt. Brian McNulty said at the time that blood was found in the pit where the animals fought. The birds were in such bad condition they had to be euthanized, McNulty said.
