Five abandoned dogs starved to death Philadelphia, PA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Aug 22, 2002 County: Philadelphia
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Laura Resnick
Laura Resnick, 34, of Oxford Circle could face criminal charges for the death of her five dogs when she left them alone in her locked row house while she went to the New Jersey shore.
When the investigators went to the home in response to a neighbor's phone, there was a terrible stench coming from the home. They found the decomposed carcasses of the five dogs.
Resnick's neighbor said, "We've had how many days of 90 degree plus weather? She had all her windows closed. She had all her doors closed and locked, and the dogs were in there with no food and probably no water. How do you do that?"
About one year ago Resnick bought her house. Resnick kept to herself and her neighbors did not speak to her, but they would see her coming and going from the home.
Occasionally when Resnick left the home she would take all her dogs with her. When she would leave the dogs at home, they'd sit in the window. Whenever she was home the farthest she'd take them was on her her front porch where she let them relieve themselves.
A neighbor called the police regarding the nasty habit of letting the dogs relieve themselves on the porch. "They went over and they talked to her and said she couldn't do that. After that, she didn't bring them out anymore."
The last time the next door neighbor saw Resnick was about five weeks ago.
The neighbor said, "I later heard them over there, fighting and carrying on, probably tearing the place up. I said to my daughter. 'They must be hungry. I don't know where she is.'"
"After a while, we stopped hearing them bark at all."
Then, she called 911. The firefighters had to use masks because of the stench before they could enter the home.
Resnick was unemployed. When the police reached Resnick by phone in New Jersey, she said she wasn't coming in to talk with them regarding the dogs because she was being evaluated in a New Jersey hospital. References« PA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Philadelphia County, PA
