Ruth Richards, 72, who lives in a suburb near Rochester faces animal cruelty charges. Her neighbors called the authorities to report a putrid stench coming from her home.
When the authorities investigated the complaint, they found 55 feces-covered animals living in her split-level suburban home. The investigators had to wear masks due to the stench in and around her home.
John O'Coin, animal control officer, said "This is absolutely one of the worst cases I've ever seen. I can't even tell if the animals are healthy until they are cleaned up."
There were 45 cats, eight dogs, a rabbit and a turtle that must all be checked out by a veterinarian. It depends on the health of the animals whether Richards will be charged with animal cruelty.
The interior of the home which is worth about $117,000 was uninhabitable. The floors were covered with matted layers of feces and urine. There is a possibility the home might be condemned. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
