Samantha McCarthy, 27, has been charged with failing to provide sustenance, a violation of Agriculture and Market Law that carries penalties such as a fine, up to one year in prison and a temporary or permanent prohibition to have more animals. McCarthy's Brentwood home is near Islip.

McCarthy was a veterinary hospital worker who neighbors and animal officials said adopted several dogs and cats of out of compassion. She was charged by police with animal abuse when they found neglected and dead pets in her Brentwood home and backyard.

Four starving dogs and one cat were taken to the Town of Islip Animal Shelter. There were three dead dogs found among the starving dogs. Two of the dead dogs were locked in cages with no food or water. One of the dogs had recently died and was wrapped in plastic.

The investigation was made because of an anonymous report of a foul smell and animals that were being kept in squalid, horrible conditions.

The SPCA said, "They were low in weight, they appeared to have diarrhea, and one of the dogs was just bones. There was no food in the cages and one German shepherd was kept in a very small cage."

The SPCA was shocked to find out McCarthy is an employee for an undisclosed veterinary hospital and had taken those animals into her home out of compassion.

"She is what they call a collector. They rescue dogs, because they don't believe they should go to animal shelters."

One of her neighbors said, "I know she breeds dogs and takes dogs to show, so it is very shocking to find out they had animals living in their feces and starving. She loves animals....."
