An Oakdale man was arrested on animal cruelty charges after shooting his German shepherd with a handgun.

Montville police said Aristeo Pichay, 59, went inside his home after his dog growled at him and, with his front door cracked open, he shot the dog in the head with a Glock 9 mm handgun.

Police said the bullet went through the dog's head, the siding of the house and into a car.

Pichay was additionally charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Released on bond, he is due to appear in Norwich Superior Court July 20.
