A dead dog with a rope and a brick tied around its neck was found in Orange Beach late last week. The dog washed up on Ono Island following heavy surf from last week's tropical storm.
"It's one of the saddest things I've ever seen," says Corporal Francis Fleming with the Orange Beach Police Department. "We think the dog was alive when it was thrown into the water and it never had a chance. I just can't imagine how someone could do something like this." Police are still investigating the case but so far have no leads.
"There are people and places where you can take animals if you don't want them," says Fleming. "It's just wrong to do something like this. We hope somebody will come forward with information in this case that'll lead to an arrest." Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor under Alabama law, but police say the law is flexible and open to interpretation. Investigators say in this case, felony charges could be filed once a suspect is named.
