As temperatures soared to 90 degrees last weekend, a puppy was found listless and panting in a Mercedes Benz while its owner shopped at a mall on June 17, 2006, police said.

A 21-year-old Weymouth woman faces charges of animal cruelty after two shoppers found her black and white pooch severely agitated in the locked car at the South Shore Plaza, police said. Officers who arrived on scene found the cars windows only slightly open with the dog apparently desperate for a sip of water. Officer Charles Bata managed to free the pooch after jimmying the lock. The cops then left a note for the owner stating the dog was at the Braintree police station.

Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said the woman did not show up to fetch her dog until about 7 p.m., but police did not know how long the dog was in the car before passers-by spotted it. He said police are not releasing the owners name.

But he did warn residents to make sure they do not leave their children or pets in cars during this steamy summer. We see this far too often, Jenkins said. It is a dangerous practice and parents and pet owners should be aware of the potentially tragic consequences.
