Police Chief Bart Mitchell went to a vacant residence oh Bohrer Drive on June 14, 2006 after being notified that dogs were ransacking the neighborhood. The prior resident had been evicted from the home and left behind two adult dogs and four small puppies. Southmayd city personnel had received many calls about the animals, saying they were tearing into trash bags looking for food.

Mitchell found the tenant had left a small plastic swimming pool with water in it for them, but no food. The property owner had fed the dogs the weekend before and filled the pool with water, then contacted the tenant. Mitchell said the tenant had agreed to pick up the dogs, but hasnt, so he called the county animal control officer, who picked up all six animals. Mitchell filed a report with the D.A.s office for cruelty to animals (abandonment and failure to feed or water) and to the Southmayd Municipal Court for six cases of animals at large.
