On the evening of June 25, he said, a family returned to their Burrows Street home to find that someone had broken into the house and beheaded the family's 6-year-old Chihuahua, named Babes, said Richard Gerbasi, vice president of operations for the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm.
"I feel like I lost one of my kids," said Wanetta Cannioto, 28, of Rochester, who owned the dog.
After the family returned from an afternoon outing, Cannioto said her 6-year-old daughter found Babes on the floor.
The dog's bones, internal organs and head reportedly had been removed and the 11/2-pound dog "was lying on the floor like a bearskin rug," said Cannioto's mother, Linda Harris, 55, of Rochester.
"We don't know who did it or why."
Two other dogs a Rottweiler and a pit bull/boxer were found locked in another room in the house, Gerbasi said. Neither of those dogs was injured.
Cannioto said she and her family are coping with the loss. They plan to install an alarm system and surveillance cameras at their home. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
