Several recent animal beheadings in Rochester may be linked to a religious ritual, Humane Society officials believe.
On June 27 morning a passerby found three deseased animals --- a mutilated goat and three beheaded chickens --- bundled together in a white sack and left at the corner of North Clinton Avenue and Avenue D. The goat's front legs, head and intestines had been removed.
Over the weekend, someone apparently killed a white goat and five chickens and left their beheaded bodies along with three pennies on the railroad tracks at Otis Street, said Richard Gerbasi, vice president of operations for the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm. Animal cruelty investigators responded to the scene Sunday, just before midnight.
Gerbasi suggested that the deaths may be linked to rituals practiced by believers of voodoo, Santeria or another type of lesser known religion. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
