An Orange County family came home on June 28 to find their home burglarized and their dog, a beagle mix named Rocky, shot to death.

The family lived off Sadler Avenue in the Tangerine area of northwest Orange County. Investigators believe the homeowners walked in on the burglary in progress. They say it was the newest in a rash of burglaries in the community.

The dog was found dead in a back bedroom. The family said the dog barked a lot, but would not have attacked an intruder.

The family thought they'd lost all of the jewelry in the home, but investigators found it all in a pillow case. They believe the intruder was there and dropped them when homeowner returned home around 1:00pm. The homeowner's guns, three rifles and a pistol, were lined up on the floor of the living room.

Another neighbor who was burglarized a few weeks ago believes the break-ins have escalated in danger now.

"That breaks my heart. We have three dogs and, if they shot my dogs, that would be like family. So if feel for them, I really do," said neighbor Helene Summers.

Deputies believe the same burglar, or burglars, kicked in the door of another home about an hour before the homeowner walked in to find the family pet dead. In that case, a woman was home and scared the intruder away.

In any case, deputies are concerned that the violent nature of the break-ins just became more dangerous.
