A Corrales woman who operates horseback riding stables has been charged with 21 counts of animal cruelty.

Robin Florance argues, though, that if it werent for her, her horses would have been slaughtered.

According to Corrales police, Florance was giving rides to people using horses that were malnourished and ill.

Some had open sores, lacerations, swollen limbs simply from being underfed and not watered and overworked, said Corrales Police Department Lieutenant Vic Mangiacapra.

Many of these horses theyre talking about will never be fat, counters Florance. She says they were in bad shape when she rescued them from being put to slaughter. I feel like Ive given them a second chance, she says.

Theres a lot this horse can offer, she said. If he can carry a small child down the ditch and be enjoyed and taken care of, thats a great thing.

Despite the charges against her, Florance still has the horses, says Mangiacapra.

Its a matter of having a place to board these animals and the costs of the fees, boarding and vet bills, said Mangiacapra. Therefore she will be given an opportunity to keep them and get their condition to improve.
