A local veterinarian says she's never seen anything like this before. Lesley Mailler says the case of "Remi" the puppy, is the worst case of animal abuse she has ever treated.

The four to five month old puppy was found by Animal Control on the afternoon of June 22 in the 100 block of East 54th Street in Savannah and taken to VCA Greater Savannah Animal Hospital.

Mailler says the puppy was dehydrated, in shock and near death. She says the dog has injuries consistent with being dragged behind a vehicle.

"A lot of her injuries are just going take a lot of time to heal," says Mailler. "And she more than likely has to have skin grafts on the front legs in particular."

Hospital staff have named the puppy Remi, which is short for the pain medication she's been receiving.

"This is red spray paint on her ear," Mailler tells me. She says when the puppy was brought to them, most of the dog's body was covered in spray paint.

"I just don't understand," Mailler says. "It's almost like entertainment I think for some people to do this to animals."

Much of the puppy's skin on its feet and stomach was scraped off. Mailler says the dog may have some permanent damage to a foot, has serious damage to the lip and jaw and lost 6 teeth.

"It's so sad because she's such a sweet little dog and how some animal can go through that kind of abuse and still wag its tail and trust you and not try to bite is amazing," Maillere says.

Mailler says the puppy is receiving daily care which includes antibiotics to control infection and a lot of love. Some staff members have even said they may want to adop Remi when she's well.

"And we are accepting donations for her care," Mailler says. "We're also looking for the people who did this to this dog and the Animal Control Department has an investigator on it so if anybody had any information or saw anything, please contact authorities."

If you'd like to help with Remi's care, you can call the VCA Greater Savannah Animal Hospital at 355-8898. Or you can send your donation to 1350 E. DeRenne Avenue, Savannah, GA 31406.
