23 dogs seized from condemned home
Milwaukee, WI (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, May 15, 1997
County: Milwaukee

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Robert Romano Jr

Robert Romano Jr, who lived in a seven-room residence in the 1600 block of South 18th Street had 23 dogs seized from his feces strewn home which has been condemned.

The investigation was the result of neighbors' complaints about dogs that were loose and chasing them. Romano lived alone in the house and worked as a beautician at the Pfister Hotel. He is not allowed to continue living in the home after it was condemned.

An official from the city health department said, "Let's put it this way, when you walked into the back door, you walked up on a mound of animal feces."

Romano's neighbors said he kept to himself.

Gregory Jach, city health department vector and nuisance control manager, said Romano is likely to receive citations over the incident but that any specific action against Romano had yet to be determined. The city prohibits people living in one or two family homes from having more than three adult dogs or cats.

The Shar-pei dogs weighed between 35 and 60 pounds and many had skin diseases and were sick. The dogs were sent to the Humane Welfare Society and some may have to be killed. One of the dogs was a mixed breed and there were approximately six to eight puppies.

Romano apologized and helped the authorities when they removed the animals from the home.
