Ladique "Ladd" Brown, 53, of Sardis has been charged with 13 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and one count of criminal littering.

Both of these charges are misdemeanors and could carry a jail sentence and fines. Brown was arrested on Jan 13. He was able to post a $2,000 bond and was released on the same day.

The 13 cows were found on the night of Jan 11 in a creek running beneath Kings Bend Road. It has been reported the owner of the cows said they died from malnutrition and he dumped them in the creek. It appears Brown had done this before.

The cows were removed from the creek and taken to a landfill for burial.

Randy Pugh, chief deputy sheriff, said the cows had died of worms and starvation. Some of the cows may have been shot by the owner. Brown should have buried the animals on his property instead of dumping them in the creek. State law requires the cows to be burned or buried.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Investigator Michael Granthum stated they are concerned about the condition of Brown's other cows. They don't want to leave a herd of cows suffering.

Brown is scheduled to appear before Dallas County District Court Judge Nathaniel Walker on Feb 11.
