A Fayette County man is facing animal neglect charges after one of his horses was put down because of a lingering injury.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office Friday filed charges against Robert Paul Bass, 64, after a veterinarian told them earlier in the week that a mare quarter horse "had not received proper care and had to be put down," said Sgt. Allen Henderschott.

The horse had a lingering injury to its rear right foot that had not been treated, he said.

Bass had many other horses, but this was the only one that had been neglected, Henderschott said. Fayette County authorities have not had any other problems with Bass in the past, he said.

Animal neglect is a serious misdemeanor.
