Dog choked, woman beaten, baby thrown on bed Lowell, MA (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Apr 16, 2006 County: Middlesex
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Abraham Figueroa
A 30-year-old Lowell man is facing assault and animal-cruelty charges after he punched his girlfriend, threw his 8-month-old baby on a bed, then choked their pet dog in a drunken rage, a prosecutor alleges.
After the April 16 incident, Abraham Figueroa, of 231 Liberty St., Apt. 102, returned to the bar where he had been drinking earlier and had more to drink, a prosecutor says.
In Lowell Superior Court, Figueroa was ordered held on $7,500 cash bail after pleading innocent to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (two counts), intimidating a witness, assault and battery (two counts), malicious destruction of property (three counts), animal cruelty and threats (two counts).
Defense attorney Joanne Walsh argued for lower bail, saying Figueroa has a job and the victim continues to contact her client despite a restraining order she took out.
The girlfriend, Angela Jasilewicz, sustained a black eye and bruises, while her daughter and the dog were unhurt, prosecutor Kevin Ryle said.
Ryle said police arrived at the apartment at 10:15 p.m., to find the front door and door frame damaged and kicked in. Jasilewicz told police she and Figueroa had been out during the day and stopped by an ATM for money. While stopped, Figueroa became angry and smashed the car window. She drove away, leaving him in the parking lot.
A while later, Figueroa returned home after drinking and found he was locked out of the apartment. He kicked in the door and used a piece of the wooden door frame to hit her, Ryle alleges. He also flipped a table, hitting her.
Figueroa began to punch Jasilewicz, threatening to kill her and their baby, Ryle said. When the baby began to cry, Figueroa yelled at the baby and threw her down on the bed and later the crib, Ryle said.
During the alleged attack, Figueroa picked up their small dog and choked and punched it until the dog was able to get free and flee the apartment.
The assault ended when Figueroa heard fire engines and sirens passing by and thought the police were coming, Ryle said. He fled the apartment and was arrested at a nearby bar.
Figueroa's next court date is June 20. References« MA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Middlesex County, MA
