On March 28, 2006, Citrus County Animal Services seized seven Arabian mares in very poor condition from Betsy Burger (AKA Helen Elizabeth Burger). Sadly, an eighth mare's condition required immediate humane euthanasia.

Ms. Burger has a prior history of poor horse management and in August of 1998, had 123 Arabian horses sold at Sheriff sale.

Judge Mark Yerman presided over the most recent case and remanded the custody of the seven Arabian mares turned over to Citrus County Animal Services. Judge Yerman further prohibited Ms. Burger from contact, custody or control of horses in the future.

While in the care of Citrus County Animal Services, the mares have blossomed into beauties gaining over 200 pounds through consistent but routine horse care. The mares range in age from 6 - 24, are coggins negative, vaccinated, dewormed and their hooves were recently trimmed. Some were used as brood mares and received little handling. Our staff have been working with them daily and their ground manners have improved as dramatically as their overall condition (see attached photos).

They will be auctioned as required by Florida Statutes on June 24,2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Citrus County Animal Services, 4030 S. Airport Road, Inverness, Florida 34450.
